How to Create a Brand Inspiration Board
Building a brand that feels authentic, grounded, and deeply connected with your audience starts with a well-thought-out branding process. At the heart of this process is the ideation phase—where your vision starts to take shape. When your brand is clear, beautifully organized, and genuinely reflects who you are, it becomes a powerful tool in building a loyal, trusting community.
In this post, I’m going to walk you through the process of creating a brand identity mood board on Pinterest—a step that will leave you feeling inspired to craft an authentic brand that tells your story and resonates with your ideal clients.
Step 1: Create a Brand Inspiration Board on Pinterest
Let's start the journey! The first step in the creative process is to build your brand inspiration board on Pinterest. I recommend starting with a secret board so you and your collaborators are the only ones who can see it—it’s your personal space to dream and curate!
Head to your Pinterest home page and let your creativity flow. This is your moment to have fun and get lost in the beauty of inspiration.
You can go down the Pinterest rabbit hole or focus on specific elements that you already know you want to represent your brand. For example, at Wild Cabin Studio, we’re all about nature, especially pine trees. So, we might start by searching for “pine trees” to find images, colors, textures, and photography that reflect that vibe. Your brand might have its own visual identity based on its mission, values, or aesthetic, so think about what imagery aligns with your unique story.
Step 2: Narrow Down Your Board & Make Notes
After you’ve pinned to your heart’s content, take a moment to pause and reflect. Now it’s time to dig deep and refine your selections. Go through your board and ask yourself: “Does this image truly capture the essence of my brand?” If it doesn’t, let it go.
As you refine, make notes on the pins that resonate most with you. What do you love about them? Why do they speak to your brand’s essence? How can you incorporate these elements into your brand design?
This is where the magic happens—your mood board is starting to take shape!
Step 3: Finalize Your Mood Board
Once you've curated a board that feels aligned with your brand's heart and soul, it’s time to bring it all together. There’s no right or wrong way to do this—let your creativity guide you.
If you're a digital designer, you might want to select 5-6 key images and use Canva or another design tool to create a polished mood board. If you’re a tactile creator, go old school and print your images to make a physical mood board. Whatever method you choose, remember that this board should be an authentic reflection of your brand’s spirit.
Take a step back, breathe, and make sure you feel completely in tune with your mood board. This is your brand's soul captured in visuals—let it tell the story.
Creating a brand identity mood board is one of my favorite parts of the branding process. It’s where the heart of your brand comes to life, and where you can let your creative spirit run wild.
